MacIntyre School
MacIntyre School represents a ground up design for a school for children with special needs. Its location within a conservation area and the grounds of a listed building dictated the use of traditional materials. The challenge was to synthesize modern methods environmental standards with traditional construction.
The new school required very specific design response to the children’s needs. The design team used workshops with staff and students to work through strategies to inform the design the building. A stain glass window was produced for the Main Hall, integrating elements of the children’s work with Makaton principles, to create a message saying “Welcome to MacIntyre School”
A material and colour palette design for the school’s corridors was used in order to facilitate the students movement throughout the building, this was achieved through the use of differing textures and colours to which the students respond to in different ways.
