Cooks Wharf
Winner of the Aylesbury Vale Design Award (2002).
This self build home, set on the bank of the Grand Union Canal was designed with the main living areas at first floor level and orientated to maximise solar gain and external views.
Due to the excellent views of the canal and the countryside it was deemed appropriate to locate the living spaces on the first floor, with vast areas of glazing to open up the space to the out doors, and to create a large balcony space from which to enjoy the outdoors. The use of sliding glass doors on the first floor allows for the entire living space to spill out onto the balcony and create larger space for entertaining.
Due to the levels of acoustic intrusion on site, the circulation spaces and wet areas were positioned on the eastern elevation to create an acoustic buffer to the nearby railway, allowing acoustic intrusion into the primary living spaces to be reduced.
